This film ran in theatres for more than 50 weeks making it a golden jubilee, and it was the highest blockbuster at the box office for the year 1988 in Bollywood.
Mahesh Deshmukh (Anil Kapoor) joined the nation’s armed forces so that he could honestly and patriotically serve the country. During his college days he had a run-in with fellow-collegian Mohini (Madhuri Dixit). A bet between his friends and himself ends up with his falling in love with Mohini. Mahesh subsequently realizes that he indeed has fallen in love with her, and Mohini reciprocates as well. Mohini’s dad (Anupam Kher), however, is an alcoholic and demands that Mohini takes up dancing and prostitution so that he can get his daily dose of alcohol. Mohini attempts to take refuge with Mahesh. But cirumstances tangle him to such an extent that he is arrested, charged, and sentenced to stay away from Bombay city limits. When Mahesh returns, it is no longer the honest and patriotic Mahesh, but a gangster called Munna who has many old scores to settle, with his best friend Baban.
